Been at this all morning and of course found something that needed massive amounts of work. Had to print out another 40-something pages, to check for repeated points in multiple conversations…the sort of thing that real people do, but that (so I’ve been told for year) annoys readers no end. “He said that already!” (As if we didn’t all say the same things over and over…but fiction isn’t reality, and this is one of the ways.)
It’s almost 1 pm and instead of being halfway from where I was to the end, I’ve been fighting with a 62 page (overlong) chapter with a lot of “stuff” in it. Very important information has to be conveyed–but only once–and always in character for both the teller and the told–which at the moment it’s not, esp. after I’ve changed the order, removed duplicates, etc.
More later, I hope, when I can finally say “Finished (for now)!” That’s looking more and more like midnight or after, yet again, unless this chapter cooperates better than it has so far. Yes, it’s complicated. But it can’t read complicated. It has to read as if it’s clear as glass. Good glass. It’s been faking good glass–the writing itself is clear, but what it’s clear about is muddled.
