This snippet is actually two snippets from a longer conversation that’s riddled with spoilers. I picked out the bits that spoiler only one thing…and I don’t think it’s a “bad” spoiler. However, if you don’t want to know anything at all, best not go beyond the cut.
Location: High Lord’s Hall, Fin Panir
Who: Marshal-General Arianya, Marshal Sofan, Rort his yeoman-marshal, and various witnesses to the challenge.
Approximate situation (unspoilered, I hope): Sofan and Rort have done something that caused Arianya to order them brought to her for judgment, but they are unrepentant and Sofan has challenged her to mortal combat. She hopes he will reconsider, but he’s adamant; he’s younger than she is, somewhat of a bully.
……………………………………
Arianya nodded to the others. “High Marshals, bring forth the swords.” She unwrapped her own sword belt; Sofan and Rort had been disarmed already. Now Sofan looked uncertain for the first time.
“Swords are not traditional–”
“They are when you challenge a Marshal-General,” Arianya said.
……………………………………..
One of the spoilers in this section is who Sofan’s related to, and why that matters.
And very shortly I’m off to bed, and up early to finish the last preparations and go catch a train to Chicago. Even if the netbook (which is being quirky) continues to work as well as it is, I’m not likely to be online much while I’m there. Play nicely, please, while I’m not here. (Yes, you nearly always do, but just a gentle reminder.)

Have safe, peaceful travels, a wonderful Chicon, and the pleasure of returning to dream wonderful dreams when you return to the joy of your own bed!

Well! We’ve had hints before of Girdism’s potential as a charter for bullies, but what do Gnomes make of this form of legal decision? When did it enter the Code?
Comment by Daniel Glover — August 28, 2012 @ 6:33 am
Richard,
I think we’ll read about that in the redacted spoilers since, evidently, the yeoman-marshal hadn’t heard of such things either and figured he could beat the Marshal General to a pulp with hauks.
Comment by Jenn — August 28, 2012 @ 6:36 am
There are always bad apples in the bushel no matter how often you sort through them. Oh the suspense is killing me.
Thank you for the snippet.
Comment by Genko — August 28, 2012 @ 9:09 am
Challenging a Marshal General? That’s gutsy, or maybe foolhardy. I wonder …
Comment by Wickersham's Conscience — August 28, 2012 @ 2:09 pm
I think the mystery of who stole a certain item may have been solved. As for the outcome, I think we can trust in Gird.
But it’s very hard to wait…
Comment by Iphinome — August 28, 2012 @ 2:21 pm
Wait! You mean it isn’t a pillow fight?
Comment by Ginny W. — August 28, 2012 @ 2:42 pm
We haven’t been in Fin Panir for quite a while, half a year or longer?
I wonder what a Marshal would do to occasion such judgment? or such a challenge?
Perhaps in lieu of a pillow fight, the bandas are stuffed with feathers?
Comment by Hans van der Boom — August 29, 2012 @ 4:52 am
Very, very interesting. Good to read about a strong and resoruceful Arianya again. Unrepentant before their High-Marshal. Must be serious indeed.
Comment by Sharidann — August 29, 2012 @ 5:56 am
Interesting one,
Particularly as the way you describe the spoilers lets us wonder who exactly the protagonists are related with.
Comment by Jenn — August 29, 2012 @ 7:32 am
Iphinome,
I vote for pool noodles! Dibs on the lime green.
Comment by Tracy — August 29, 2012 @ 9:46 am
Oooh! I love snippets, especially those which describe the inevitable Clueless Idiot discovering that there might possibly be a flaw in his Evil Plan. And I agree with Wickersham’s Conscience; a chain of evidence as to who might have absconded with a certain Item might be forming here. Cool — thank you!!

I shall have to start on a sampler with ‘Trust in Gird’ as the motto!

Snippet before travel? Is that like Whiskey Before Breakfast? I could easily spend Sunday Morning on the church steps reading these with the rest of the crew. 😉
Comment by Linda — August 30, 2012 @ 8:14 pm
Well, I guess it’s time for me to “hit the books” again to see if the snippet sets off any “I never noticed that before” moments.
In a way it feels like walking through a dark space where there may or may not be things brushing up against one. Is it a hint or isn’t it?
Comment by Connyboy — August 31, 2012 @ 1:54 am
Today (august 31, in Sweden), is Arvid’s name day according to the swedish calendar.
Hipp hipp hurray! 🙂
Comment by Mollie Marshall — August 31, 2012 @ 5:09 am
Details of the theft of the certain item have been left quite vague so far. Arvid found the body of the putative thief, and the assumption has been that the theft was carried out by one person acting alone. Either or both of these could be wrong.
Sofan sounds like the nasty Marshal Pir. I do hope Pir had his knuckles rapped for his mistreatment of Arvid: any gossip from the extras’ break room?
Comment by Jenn — August 31, 2012 @ 2:40 pm
Mollie,
I was just in the extras’breakroom. Nothing overly juicy is going on. The Barmaids Association is seconding your knuckle rap even if some feel that Arvid was a (dashing) knucklehead.
The stable boys are chasing the scullery maids who are drooling over the squires (as usual).
There is a group of Girdsmen, Falkians and mercenaries forming in the far corner (as far away from the scullery maids as possible) who are sharpening their swords and comparing scars and stories.
Everyone seem to be rather tight lipped. I am going to have to ply them with Anderssat’s wine at this rate.
Comment by Daniel Glover — September 1, 2012 @ 7:02 am
Jenn,
Has Anderssat gotten soft after his trek to the north? Otherwise that’s going to cost you in nata rather than niti.
Comment by Jenn — September 1, 2012 @ 10:30 am
Daniel,
Don’t I know it! As I won’t stoop to blackmailing the Count, I am thinking of giving Gwenno knitting lessons to cover the costs. Marrakai have money and she may want to show Beclan up.
I was also thinking of taking up employment as the Verrakai babysitter.
Comment by Richard — September 1, 2012 @ 2:29 pm
Mollie,
we don’t even know if the thief was a real Marshal – the tabard he wore could have been stolen too, so for all we’ve been told he could have been a servant, a groom – or a knight. Which is what I assumed nasty Pir to be. (On checking KotN I find it was never specific.)
Comment by Nadine Barter Bowlus — September 1, 2012 @ 8:32 pm
If my memory is accurate, there was a Girdish knight named Pir in the company that trekked to Kolobia, but that Pir was a sympathetic character. The “nasty” Pir is probably someone else.
Comment by Iphinome — September 2, 2012 @ 5:26 am
For those of you who didn’t come to #chicon7, yesterday her Ladyship did a reading of Vardan’s story from the 12 days of snippets.
Comment by Richard — September 2, 2012 @ 1:42 pm
Nadine,
yes, that Pir was a woman, so definitely a different person, though a knight (from the Order of the Cudgel).
@Iphinome,
of course, the perfect choice.
