I think–I hope–this won’t be a spoiler at all. It’s from Book IV, not Echoes, but it doesn’t reveal anything too…spoilerish. I hope. And after all, it might disappear in editing.
“She looked around and caught her breath at the pattern of colored stone in the room’s center. Once having looked, she could not look away. The colored bands that formed a pattern of intertwining and curving lines seemed to force her gaze to move along them.”
This very short snippet (short to avoid spoilerage, and also thus devoid of person, place, and time cues) has connections that run all the way back to Surrender None (in book terms) and before (in Paksworld history terms.)
Addendum (late evening): just for fun, the progress on the knitting projects while riding on the train and waiting in lines and sitting at a table in Artists Alley at A-Kon and such over the past month:
Project #1 is 40 inches wide and will be somewhere in the 40 inches to 48 inches long range. (Depends on where I run out of yarn.) It’s on size 7 (American) wooden KnitPicks wooden “Harmony” needles with a longish cable between them. It’s worked in both garter stitch and stockinette and is giving me valuable practice in both knit and purl.
Project #2 is a mere 6 inches wide and–in this picture–38 inches long. It’s on size 8 (American) KnitPicks acrylic needles with a short cable between them. It’s worked all in garter stitch (knitting every row) so it goes much faster (only 3o stitches per row, and all knit…zip, zip, zip…OOPS. Stop and fix…zip, zip, zip… It will be 5-6 feet long when it’s completed….whatever two balls of yarn comes to. Then it will get fringe.
Knitting is indeed a good alternate hand exercise to typing. Zero impact, completely different position of wrist and movement of fingers.

very teaserish, Elizabeth!!

I can either do teaserish or spoilerish. Avoiding teaserish leads to spoilerish. Avoiding spoilerish leads to teaserish.

This reminds me of two scenes in Kings of the North. To avoid being too spoilerish, one of them features Count Andressat, and the other, Dragon. My nose is twitching.

No Dragon in this scene, and no Count of Andressat, either. But I can say no more.

No, I didn’t think either of those two *characters* were anywhere around. My
attention was caught, you might say,
by other *things*. I do not ask, I only observe.

You can’t fool me, the she is Ky Vatta!

On a completely (not really) book sighting note. The local B&N has five fresh copies of Kings on the shelf. The spot in the new release SF/F had been empty for a while so they must think Kings will keep selling up here in Minnesota.

Confutus: Wise of you…(G)
iphinome: Oh, my, you are getting entirely too intuitive!!
Daniel: Thanks for letting me know. Whoopee!

Your knitting looks great!!!!
scarves are the best way to try out new patterns especially lace stitches. Another great thing to do with a scarf its to sew 10 inches of one side of the middle together and then you have a hooded scarf.
the “whatever” “she” is looking at sounds like the gnomish thing that Andressat almost got trapped into.
So how did Ky Vatta end up in Paks’ world? Black Hole? Authors choice to cross over whereever the heck she wishes too 🙂
happpy Knitting!

@Jenn
Heinlein’s law. If you have writer’s block for more than two days just send everyone to Tertius.

Or: throw a grenade into the room.
Or: send a team of ninjas into the room.
Or: throw something that is completely not part of what you planned into it–incongruities help. They don’t always stay, of course. The point is to get the pot bubbling, not to actually put the new item in. Once the pot bubbles, the new item(s) may or may not stay in the stew.

Hi Ms Moon,
I love your work! Do you have a publish date or title for the next book after kings yet? I am an addict of your work. I just ordered the Serrano Legacy to tide me over, but I am a fast reader, so I am hoping for a close date :)? Gotta get my fix. On a side note, are you a fan of the “Earth Children” series by Jean M Auel? I feel like you guys should be friends and hang out at strong women character writers gatherings or something?

Simon: The title of the next book out is Echoes of Betrayal, and my publisher tells me it has a March 2012 release date. However, release dates do change until the final catalogs are out. Check in here frequently for updates on the book’s progress through production. (It’s now past copy editing and somewhere in the typesetting process; I will get page proofs later in the summer, and then it has the final push to printing, binding, cover, etc.)

March of 2012? What a bummer. Can I wait that long?
Comment by elizabeth — July 7, 2011 @ 5:48 am
I guess you’ll find out, won’t you?
Seriously–most series books are spaced roughly a year apart, unless the publisher has problems, in which case it’s longer.
