Book three is being a bit slow to start, due to all the other stuff going on and also some deep thinking.
But it’s at 5600 words (roughly–not exact count) as of this morning, with over 1000 words added today.
Musing on whether the kteknik gnome Arvid runs into in Book 2 is the one who spilled the beans to the Pargunese and that’s why he was banished–and why there’s ever more trouble for gnomes on the border. There’s Occam’s Razor and then there’s deus ex machina convenience.
This is dragging me deeper into gnomish psychology than I intended to go–humans are complicated enough. Why would a gnome, created as they believe by the Lawgiver and living in Law the way fish live in water, ever stray from it? What would seduce them? What could intoxicate them? They are not, by nature, blabbermouths, and yet someone had to tell the Pargunese of the perilous treasure in that hill…
There’s always Achrya, but she prefers to work through others. I think it was a gnome, but the book’s too young yet to be sure. (I foresee another one of those “write both branches until you’re sure which one has the growing tip on it” situations.) And it can’t just be a gnome because that’s fun or interesting–I have to know what promped him…OH. Oh, my, what a nice little plot bomb just went off in my head.
Later.
